RawSpiceBar Review – The Istanbul Spice Box
The theme for September 2015 was The Istanbul Spice Box. RawSpiceBar included some unique blends this month and one of my favourite dishes is on the menu!
Lahmacun (Baharat Lamb Pizza) using the Baharat Spices
I always order Lahmacun when we go to turkish or middle eastern restaurants and I’ve been wanting to try making it for many years and have never gotten around to it. I’m so happy to see this spice blend in this box just the little push I’ve needed to get my butt in gear to make this. Vegetarians will be happy to know that on the RawSpiceBar website they have another traditional recipe for Braised Eggplant using these spices.
Za’atar and Pita Crusted Cauliflower using the Za’atar spices
Za’atar is the only blend that I’m familiar with this month, it’s a mix of Thyme, sesame seeds, oregano, salt and sumac. The crusted cauliflower recipe included this month is kid friendly and was delicious, I’ll be making this again. Rawspicebar also has a Za’atar roasted chicken recipe on their site that looks amazing.
Roasted Beet and Urfa Pepper Hummus using the Urfa Biber Spices
Confession time! I’ve never made beets before and I think I’ve only tried them a handful of times in my life. That’s the thing I really like about this box, it pushes me out of my comfort zone and forces me to try new things. Urfa Biber is a new spice to me, Rawspicebar describes it’s complex profile as sweet, smoky, salty, and sour allowing the ingredient to be utilized in everything from meat dishes to chocolaty desserts. They also suggest trying a few sprinkles of this chile pepper to brownies to give them that extra little kick.
This was one of my favourite themes that I’ve received from Rawspicebar. Their website is a very useful tool as well, it always has additional recipes for the spice mixes and wonderful information about spices and cooking in general. Do check them out if you haven’t already, you don’t have to be subscribed to view the recipes.

This sounds like an amazing service, a great excuse to get adventurous with food! I’m not yet used to “normal” cooking, but maybe some day in the future I’ll have to subscribe to this to expand my horizons!
